Coast Capital responds to B.C. flooding crisis with $10,000 to Red Cross relief efforts

Surrey, B.C., As warm weather and rapid snow melt continue to threaten communities across the province with record high water levels, Coast Capital Savings, Canada’s largest credit union by membership, has committed $10,000 to the Canadian Red Cross.

More than 3,000 British Columbians have been displaced by historic flooding in May. The Canadian Red Cross launched the B.C. Floods Appeal to help meet the immediate needs of those impacted by flooding, which could include water, food, and shelter, as well as longer-term needs as people begin to return home and enter the long process of recovery.

“Our hearts are with everyone being impacted by these devastating floods,” said Kimberley Nemrava, Canadian Red Cross vice president of B.C. & Yukon. “We know how strong and resilient the people of British Columbia are and the Canadian Red Cross is here to support communities now and in the weeks to come. We are incredibly grateful for the support from Coast Capital Savings -- the ongoing generosity of British Columbians is wonderful.”

People wishing to support the work of the Red Cross are encouraged to make a financial donation to the B.C. Floods Appeal. To donate: text BCFLOODS to 30333 to donate $10 or through the Red Cross website.

“British Columbians are always quick to open their hearts, homes and wallets in times of great need,” says Coast Capital interim President and CEO Bruce Schouten. ”The current flooding crisis is no different. We are seeing some waterways hitting their highest levels in 70 years, and it is important for us to come together to support the well-being of those affected. Coast Capital has a long history of helping local British Columbian communities, and on behalf of our members, we are contributing to the relief effort and encouraging other B.C. businesses and individuals to do the same.”

Coast Capital Savings is Canada’s largest credit union by membership. An Imagine Canada Caring Company, the credit union invested $5.6 million into local communities in 2017, focusing on empowering and engaging youth.
