Coast Capital Savings brightens Nanaimo community hub

Credit union employees renovate the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Vancouver Island

Nanaimo, B.C. – Members of Coast Capital Savings' Commercial Division traded in their suits and ties for hard hats and steel-toed boots Friday to renovate the outdoor space at the Boys and Girls Club in Nanaimo.

The makeover is the division's Act of Help, a corporate initiative aimed at empowering Coast Capital employees to work together to help build a richer future for their communities. Coast Capital and Boys and Girls Clubs across British Columbia have been longstanding community partners with a shared commitment to supporting youth.

"Supporting community resources like the Boys and Girls Clubs isn't simply a feel-good activity for Coast Capital. Community Leadership is an official corporate priority that drives what we do each and every day," said Wayne Berg, Coast Capital's chief commercial officer and one of the team members who rolled up his sleeves to help with the transformation. "We believe that meaningful investment is about more than simply providing funding, it involves active engagement in the community. Today is a perfect example of that."

The renovations undertaken by the 90-person Coast Capital team include a mural installation on the facility's exterior, painting of games on the playground's concrete and other upgrades to the facility's garden, fence, and storage shed.

"These repairs were much-needed and we're beyond excited for the exterior of our building to finally reflect the vibrancy within it," said Ian Kalina, executive director, Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Vancouver Island. "We're extremely grateful for Coast Capital's growing commitment to investing in the youth of Central Vancouver Island."

Coast Capital invests 7% of its pre-tax profits back into the communities that they serve with over $5.5 million being reinvested in 2017.
